Your Guide to Using SLATE

Shortcuts Cheat Sheet

Keyboard and Mouse shortcuts are an essential part of any software for a faster workflow. It’s really recommended to get used to these shortcuts while working with Slate since they are certain to make your work faster.

Core Editor

  • Click & Drag in the time bar to scrub preview the cutscene at that time.
  • Control + Click & Drag in the time bar to set the cutscene’s end time/length.
  • Tap Space to start playing the cutscene from its current time. Tap again to stop.
  • Middle Click & Drag in the editor to move the view time left/right as well as scroll up/down.
  • Mouse Scroll to zoom in or out.
  • Alt + Left Click to move the view time left/right and scroll up/down.
  • Alt + Right Click to zoom in/out as well.
  • Click & Drag outside of any clip to make a rect selection.
  • Double Click the view time min/max slider to set the view time exactly to the length of the cutscene.
  • Drag & Drop a gameobject or a prefab to make a new Actor Group for that game object.
  • Right Click in any track timeline to get a context menu for adding a new clip at that time.
  • Tap ‘>’ to step time forwards to the next clip start time.
  • Tap ‘<‘ to step time backward to the previous clip end time.

Clips

  • Click & Drag a clip to move it.
  • Shift + Click & Drag a clip to move it while shifting all the clips after it by the same amount.
  • Click & Drag on clip edges to set its start time and end time (scale it).
  • Shift + Click & Drag on clip edges to also move the keyframes together while scaling the clip.
  • Control + Click & Drag on clip edges to set its Blend In and Blend Out properties respectively.
  • Right Click a clip to get a context menu for copy, cut, delete, and more.
  • Double Click a clip to select its target actor (same as its parent track actor) in the scene.
  • Tap Delete to delete the selected clip if any.
  • Tap ‘K’ to add a keyframe to the selected clip at the current scrubber time.
  • Tap ‘S’ to split the selected clip at the current scrubber time.
  • Tap ‘C’ to clean all keyframes out of range of the selected clip.

Dope Sheet

  • Click & Drag a key to move it.
  • Shift + Click & Drag a key to move it while shifting all the keys after it by the same amount.
  • Right Click a key to get a context menu for setting its tangents Smooth, Linear, Constant, or Copy, Delete it and more.
  • Double Click a key to move the cutscene time to that keys’ time.
  • Click & Drag in the DopeSheet to make a rect selection of keys.
  • Click & Drag the edges of a key rect selection to retime the keys inside the rect selection.
  • Right Click a key rect selection to get a context menu for Smoothing them, or Deleting them altogether.
  • Right Click in the DopeSheet to get a context menu for Create New Key Here, Paste Key Here, and more.

Curve Editor

The curve editor is the usual Unity curve editor you are already familiar with!

Cutscene Sections

  • Click & Drag a section to move it.
  • Shift + Click & Drag to do the same as the above, while also moving all clips after the section time by the same amount.
  • Control + Click & Drag to move the section and shift all sections after it without shifting clips.
  • Right Click a section to get a context menu for Insert New Section, Rename, Set Color, Delete, and more.
  • Double Click a section to set the editor view time exactly to that of the section length.
